Why Mobile Optimisation Matters

With mobile devices dominating web traffic, a poorly optimised mobile site can lead to:

  • Lower rankings – Google prioritises mobile-friendly sites in search results.
  • Bad user experience – Slow load times and difficult navigation drive visitors away.
  • Lost conversions – Mobile users expect fast, easy interactions, and delays can cost sales.

At teclan, we take a mobile-first approach to web design and search engine optimisation, ensuring that our clients’ sites are fast, responsive, and user-friendly across all devices.

1. Mobile-First & Responsive Design

A seamless mobile experience starts with design:

  • Flexible layouts that adapt to different screen sizes.
  • Touch-friendly navigation with large, easy-to-click buttons and everything your customers need are available quickly, no matter the screen size.
  • Minimalist mobile design that enhances usability.
2. Speed & Performance Enhancements

Speed is critical for mobile users:

  • Image compression using next-gen formats like WebP.
  • Minified code to remove unnecessary CSS, JavaScript, and HTML.
  • Lazy loading for images and videos to improve page speed.
  • Caching strategies that reduce load times on repeat visits.
3. Mobile SEO Best Practices

Google uses mobile-first indexing:

  • Mobile usability testing via Google Search Console.
  • Optimised meta tags for better search visibility on mobile.
  • Structured data to enhance search appearance.
4. UX & Navigation Optimisation

A mobile site should be simple and intuitive:

  • Navigation menus – Clear, collapsible menus for easy access.
  • Clickable elements – Buttons and links sized for touchscreens.
  • No intrusive pop-ups – Preventing penalties from Google.
5. Continuous Testing & Monitoring

We ensure ongoing improvements by:

  • Test across multiple devices & browsers for consistency.
  • Using analytics tools to monitor user behaviour and optimise further.
  • Use industry standard performance analysis to get the best from your site and the best from Google.
The Result: A Faster, Higher-Ranking, Mobile-Friendly Website

By prioritising mobile optimisation, teclan ensures that clients’ websites:

  • Rank higher on search engines that prioritise mobile, like Google.
  • Deliver a seamless experience across all devices.
  • Convert more visitors by providing a fast, user-friendly interface.

In today’s digital-first world, your website is one of the most powerful tools your business has. It’s where potential customers go to learn about you, interact with your brand, and, often, make their first purchase. But while many businesses invest in creating a website, far fewer regularly update or improve it. If you’re still relying on a website that was built several years ago, you could be missing out on new opportunities — and losing money without even realising it. An outdated website can become a drain on your business in several subtle but significant ways.

A gif showcasing the old teclan website with a loading bar that transitions to the new teclan design showcased on mobile, desktop, and tablet.
Our website has elvolved over the years, to what you see now!

Mobile Website Optimisation: The New Standard

It’s no longer a secret that mobile traffic dominates the internet. As of 2024, more than half of all web traffic comes from mobile devices, with users expecting fast load times and seamless experiences. If your website isn’t optimised for mobile, you’re likely driving away a substantial portion of visitors before they’ve even had a chance to engage with your content.

According to research from Google, 53% of mobile users will leave a site if it takes longer than three seconds to load. Mobile-first indexing by search engines means that if your website performs poorly on smartphones or tablets, your rankings will also take a hit. This isn’t just about keeping up appearances; it’s about ensuring you’re not inadvertently alienating over half of your potential audience.

Good Web Design Focuses on the User Experience

User experience (UX) is one of the most critical aspects of web design. Today’s internet users are spoiled for choice. They expect websites to be easy to navigate, fast to load, and simple to interact with. If your website is slow, cluttered, or difficult to use, visitors won’t think twice about leaving.

In fact, it takes users just 0.05 seconds to form an opinion about your website. This first impression determines whether they’ll stay and explore or leave and potentially never return. Old, outdated websites tend to suffer from poor UX, as design standards and best practices evolve rapidly.

What does good UX look like? Clear navigation, fast loading times, and mobile responsiveness are all essential. It’s about making it easy for your users to find what they need, whether they’re browsing your product catalogue or looking to contact your business.

Expert designers create websites with clean, intuitive navigation that helps users find what they need effortlessly. Whatever the platform, whether built on WordPress, Shopify, or Aero Commerce, websites by teclan are designed to improve user engagement and increase conversions.

The Impact of Ecommerce Web Design on Speed of Sales

If your business relies on ecommerce, the performance of your website is directly tied to your sales. A slow or outdated website doesn’t just frustrate visitors; it also results in lost revenue. Studies show that a 1-second delay in page load time can lead to a 7% reduction in conversions. For an ecommerce business, this can translate into significant losses.

Solutions like Aero Commerce can help combat this issue. Aero is blazingly fast and designed to maintain its speed as your site grows and becomes more successful. Many platforms struggle with performance or even increase monthly costs as your product catalogue expands, but Aero works differently. Built on modern technology frameworks, it’s optimised for high-performance ecommerce, leaving older platforms like Sellerdeck far behind.

It’s not just about speed, though. Today’s ecommerce websites are expected to offer streamlined navigation, secure payment options, and a smooth, hassle-free checkout experience. If your website still feels clunky, or if your users must jump through too many hoops to complete a purchase, they’re likely to abandon their carts. In fact, cart abandonment rates hover around 69.57% globally, according to the Baymard Institute, and one of the biggest culprits is a poor user experience.

The lesson here? Your ecommerce site needs to be fast, functional, and intuitive to keep up with customer expectations and maximise sales.

SEO: Staying Visible in Organic Search Results

Search engine optimisation (SEO) has evolved dramatically over the years. What may have worked a decade ago — or even a few years ago — is likely no longer enough to help your website rank in search results. Google’s algorithms now favour websites that are not only fast and mobile-friendly but also secure, regularly updated, and structured correctly.

An outdated website can severely limit your organic visibility. There are several factors that search engines such as Google and Bing take into account when ranking websites for search terms. For example, slow load times or a lack of mobile optimisation can push your site down the rankings. Additionally, search engines look for websites that are kept fresh with new content and up-to-date technology. Websites that haven’t been updated in years can be seen as irrelevant or outdated by both users and search engines.

Businesses with regularly updated blogs and optimised pages tend to generate 55% more website visitors than those that don’t. Keeping your website up to date with fresh content, whether that’s a blog or refreshed landing pages, is one of the simplest ways to improve your SEO and attract new visitors.

Protect Your Business & Customers With A Secure Website

One of the most overlooked risks of an outdated website is security. Older websites often run on outdated software, use unmaintained plugins, or feature vulnerabilities that can be exploited by hackers. The cost of a security breach can be catastrophic — not only in terms of lost revenue but also the long-term damage to your reputation.

With the rise in cyberattacks, particularly on small to medium businesses, ensuring your website is secure is more critical than ever. Regular updates and security patches are vital to protect your site from threats. If your website runs on outdated technology, you’re leaving both your business and your customers’ data exposed to potential breaches.

A professional webmastering service, like the one offered by teclan, can help keep your website up to date, ensuring vital components such as plug-ins are regularly maintained. While no solution is 100% foolproof, our Gatekeeper packages offer robust protection to significantly reduce the risk of malicious attacks.

In today’s world, where GDPR compliance and data protection are essential, neglecting security could lead to hefty fines or legal issues, adding to the hidden costs of an old website.

A Fresh Website to Reflect Fresh Branding

Businesses evolve, and so should their websites. If your website was designed several years ago, it might no longer reflect your current brand identity, messaging, or values. While your products or services may have grown and changed, your online presence might still be stuck in the past.

A modern, well-designed website is one of the most effective ways to communicate your brand to customers. It’s not just about looking good — it’s about ensuring that your website tells the right story about who you are today. An outdated website can make your business appear stagnant, even if that’s far from the truth.

We recently worked with Highland Learning Academy during their rebranding from Virtual Learning Academy to HLA. Our team of WordPress design experts delivered a fresh, modern website that aligned with their new brand identity. The result was a slick, professional site offering an improved user experience tailored to HLA’s diverse audience, including corporate clients, educational institutions, and individual learners.

Time for an Update?

The hidden costs of an outdated website can stack up quickly, from lost customers due to poor mobile performance, to missed sales from a slow ecommerce platform, or diminished SEO rankings that prevent new visitors from finding you. Taking the time to assess your current website and investing in updates can have a significant impact on your business. Keeping up with web design best practices is crucial for staying competitive. By regularly updating your website, you’ll not only enhance user experience but also improve your chances of success in an increasingly competitive online environment.

At teclan, our web developers and designers specialise in creating responsive, next-level websites that perform seamlessly across all devices. By combining SEO best practices, user-focused design, and brand storytelling, we help businesses build websites that not only look great but also engage and convert. So, you’ve set your sights on a fresh website design for your business and are keen to get an idea of the associated costs. We get it; not everyone is well-versed in setting a web design budget, and some clients may be hesitant to reveal this crucial information to a web design agency.

In this blog post, we’ll explore the benefits (and potential setbacks) of having a clear web budget, both for the agency and the client.

"How Much Will My New Website Cost?"

At teclan, we steer clear of one-size-fits-all template websites and fixed prices. When clients approach us with the classic question, “How much for a website?” it becomes challenging to provide a satisfying answer without some context. We recognise that some clients are new to the website-building process, and we understand the need for clarity.

Many businesses cast a wide net, seeking quotes from various agencies to gauge a ballpark figure. While this approach is understandable, clients must provide sufficient information to support this process. Most reputable web design agencies, including us, require a project brief to offer an accurate quotation.

What is a Web Design Project Brief?

To obtain an accurate estimate for your new website, it’s recommended that you provide a project overview when reaching out to an agency. Don’t waste time by sending generic enquiries without project details, as professional agencies often require a project brief before putting together any sort of proposal. When first reaching out, a project brief can range from informal bullet points within an online submission form, to a more comprehensive formal document.

Key components we’d recommend including in your website project brief include:

  • Overview of your business
  • Pros and cons of your current website
  • A list of competitors (up to five)
  • Objectives for the new website — what do you want to achieve?
  • Specific web features needed and/or wanted
  • Examples of websites you like and reasons why
  • Project deadline (if any)
  • Project budget

While you may not be able to answer every point, more information benefits both you and the agency, ensuring a response tailored to your needs and avoiding nasty budget surprises down the line.

How To Determine a Website Budget

If you’re new to website projects or business, determining a budget might be challenging. The cost of a website varies based on features and functions. Agencies can provide estimates for template-based sites, but custom solutions require more detailed budgeting.

Consider:

  • Your wider marketing budget allocation
  • Affordability
  • Importance of the website to your business as a whole
  • eCommerce considerations: how many products will you need to sell to ensure a return on investment?

Why Share Your Budget With a Web Design Agency?

Sharing your budget upfront streamlines the initial stages for both you and the agency. Without a budget, agencies might invest time in crafting a detailed proposal that later proves unfeasible for the client. By providing a budget along with a project brief, the agency can quickly determine if your expectations align with the proposed budget, avoiding wasted time for both parties.

When providing teclan with a budget, you can expect one of two responses:

  1. This sounds feasible and we’d love to work with you. We’ll provide a ballpark figure based on your brief to ensure affordability, before having a full scoping conversation to determine a proposal with a price for you to review based on your goals.
  2. Unfortunately, this budget is unrealistic for what you’re hoping to achieve. We’d suggest a budget of £X amount for that kind of work. We’d still love to work with you and with what you’ve got to play with, this is what we would suggest instead…

This puts you as a client in a much better situation moving forward either way.

How to Ensure You Won't Get Ripped Off When Providing Your Web Design Budget

Concerned about agencies taking advantage? Reputable agencies with a strong portfolio and positive testimonials will offer honest advice. They may suggest other ways to optimise your budget, such as additional services like SEO or technical enhancements that improve user experience and business efficiency.

You've Confirmed Your Budget - Ready To Start Your Project?

At teclan, we’re dedicated to helping businesses to achieve their goals online. As more businesses move online, the need for a strong and reliable website becomes increasingly important. A well-designed website can help establish credibility, increase brand recognition, and ultimately drive sales. However, many business owners may be unsure if they need a web designer or if they can handle their website on their own. Web design is a highly specialised field that requires technical expertise, creativity, and a keen eye for design. By working with a professional web designer, you can ensure that your website is both visually appealing and technically sound.

At teclan, we understand every business has its own unique goals so we work with brands to create visually appealing, and most importantly, user-friendly functioning websites. We specialise in creating responsive websites that are optimised for all devices, including desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Responsive web design ensures that your website looks great and functions well regardless of the device your visitors are using. Below, we’ll explore the benefits of responsive website design and why updating to a reliable ecommerce platform matters while answering the question of whether working with a web designer like teclan can help you achieve your online goals.

Responsive Web Design

In today’s digital age, users access websites on a wide range of devices, including desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. This means that websites must be designed to be responsive, meaning that they adapt to the device that the user is viewing the website on. A responsive website ensures that your website looks great and functions well on all devices, providing a seamless user experience.

But how do you ensure that your website is responsive? Working with a web designer can ensure that your website is designed with responsiveness in mind. At teclan, our web design team has extensive experience in creating responsive websites that look great and function seamlessly on all devices. We use the latest technologies and techniques to ensure that your website is optimised for all devices, providing your users with a consistent and engaging experience no matter how they access your site.

Some of the benefits of ensuring your website is responsive include:

  1. Improved user experience
With a responsive website, your visitors will enjoy a seamless experience regardless of the device they are using. They won’t have to zoom in or out or scroll horizontally to view content, which can be frustrating and lead to a high bounce rate.
  2. Increased mobile traffic
Mobile devices account for more than half of all internet traffic, and this number is only expected to increase. By having a responsive website, you can ensure that you are reaching and engaging with your mobile audience effectively.
  3. Improved SEO
Google recommends responsive web design as the best practice for mobile configurations, and using a single URL for all devices helps to improve your website’s search engine ranking. Plus, you’ll only have to maintain one website rather than a separate mobile version.

Reliable Ecommerce Platforms

If you’re an online retailer, your ecommerce platform is the backbone of your business. It’s where your customers go to browse your products, make purchases, and interact with your brand. As such, it’s critical that your ecommerce platform is reliable, secure, and easy to use.

There are many ecommerce platforms available, but not all are created equal. Some platforms may be slow, difficult to use, or prone to crashes and security issues. That’s why it’s important to work with a website developer to ensure that your ecommerce platform is reliable and secure. We work with industry-leading ecommerce platforms like Aero Commerce, WooCommerce, and Shopify to create ecommerce websites that are fast, secure, and user-friendly.

Aero Commerce Partners

Of the numerous ecommerce products in the market, perhaps the most powerful is Aero Commerce. Aero is a relative newcomer to the ecommerce ecosystem, but its team is stacked with a wealth of development experience across other leading ecommerce platforms. This ecommerce platform has been designed with the evolving needs of modern retailers in mind; solving many problems other platforms often encounter such as lack of customisation and expensive running costs.

As an Aero Partner Agency, teclan is excited to be one of the first agencies in Scotland to offer Aero Commerce web designs, and we are proud to work closely with the company as they grow and expand Aero — with the stated aim of becoming the world’s leading ecommerce platform.

Why Work With A Web Design Agency?

Working with a web development and design agency can help you save time and money while ensuring that your website is optimised for success. Whether you’re a small business owner looking to establish a strong online presence, or a large retailer in need of a reliable e-commerce platform, teclan has the expertise and experience to help you achieve your online goals.

At teclan, we’re passionate about helping businesses achieve their online goals. Our team of expert web designers has extensive experience in creating responsive websites across e-commerce platforms that are fast, reliable, and engaging. In 2022, it comes as no surprise that to capture new customers, it is important that your brand has an online presence. Sharing engaging content is a key element, but so too is creating and presenting an authentic brand and maintaining that throughout all company channels. Although social media usage seems to increase daily, especially during the pandemic, it seems as though there has been a shift in the way users expect to engage and connect with one another online. Instead of seeking out idyllic, curated content which is seemingly ‘perfect’, users are opting to find platforms in which they can be themselves, no filters required. With the rise of apps such as BeReal, and the growing popularity of the ‘photo dump’ on Instagram, businesses are encouraged to keep it real both on and offline with authentic branding and content.

Keeping It Real Online

In a world where people are so used to seeing, and sharing, perfectly filtered moments and carefully curated highlights, it is easy for brands to entrap themselves in the same trend on social media. To ‘keep it real’ by sharing authentic moments with your audience, while representing your brand in a positive and engaging way may seem like going against the grain. The recent growth in following of major influencers and brands thanks to their candid moments speaks volumes so companies are now encouraged to let their brand speak for themselves through unedited, raw content online. Internet users are actively seeking outlets to share real moments with one another which has been highlighted by the rapid growth in smartphone app ‘BeReal’.

Founded in 2019, the app not only encourages users to be authentic, but in fact requires authenticity. Smartphone users who have downloaded the app are prompted by a notification once per day (at any time) to upload a photo right there and then to share with their friends. Upon opening the app, users have two minutes to upload the shot which takes both a selfie and front-facing photo simultaneously. The concept of the app is simple: in a world where it is hard to tell when pictures, or videos, have been edited, and in which people only tend to show highlights of their lives, BeReal allows users to candidly be themselves. And it’s caught on. With approximately 10.7 million app installations to date (according to Sensor Tower), April was a record month which saw a user increase of 157% from March. It is clear to see then that there is an appetite for relatability and authentic branding on social media, especially among younger audiences.

Photo Dumps and Candid Content

It’s not just the increasing use of BeReal that has highlighted a desire for authentic interaction online. Despite being one of the most popular social media platforms, Instagram does not come without its own criticisms. The app has often been slandered as the root of growing self-image concerns among young people, having a negative impact on the mental health of its users. However, the new trend of the ‘photo dump’ on Instagram which typically involves the uploading of multiple unposed, unedited camera shots and videos, further reflects a shift in attitude towards online content.

With the ever-increasing popularity of TikTok, in part thanks to numerous lockdowns, it has been interesting to note which creators have had the highest engagement or follower growth over the course of the past couple of years. Many have shot to fame thanks to their unfiltered, candid content. The likes of Brittany Broski in the US has amassed almost seven million followers on TikTok due to her candid content resonating with people and making them laugh, while Hayley Morris has grown her following by millions during the pandemic thanks to her comedy sketches in which she discusses relatable, usually ‘taboo’, topics. But what does this shift in attitude mean for businesses?

The Human Approach In Business

The trend of relatable and authentic content is not solely limited to online influencers and their audiences. In fact, authenticity is a key factor in the online strategy and branding of many major businesses. Smoothie giant innocent’s quirky branding alongside their informal, witty tone of voice across their social media channels has enabled various viral moments, keeping their brand in the minds of millions of consumers. Another brand which has benefitted from engaging with the audience of today’s preference for authenticity, and informality, is Duolingo. The app which enables users to learn new languages has seen their brand’s following on TikTok surge, garnering over 80 million ‘likes’ thanks to the somewhat unhinged, yet relatable content posted. The human approach taken by these brands has played a critical role in their recent success.

The Importance of Brand Guidelines

Maintaining consistency plays a key part in the development of a brand, alongside its authenticity. Brand consistency is the ability to deliver consistent messaging and design across all platforms over time. If you are consistent, you are more likable and dependable. Audiences are not naïve and tend to trust those who do not change at the drop of a hat, so when a business has a strong brand presence, audiences will be able to spot when a company is not being truly authentic. In order to maintain a consistent brand, it is crucial to develop a set of brand guidelines that outline every aspect of your brand strategy that includes your logo, colour scheme, tagline, typography and key messaging.

What Are The Benefits Of Authentic Branding?

Humans are fuelled by emotion, and research has continuously proven that feelings often score high over logic when it comes to developing brand loyalty. As demonstrated by the growth in following of brands and creators posting relatable content online, audiences are keen on ideas that touch an emotional nerve. We begin to trust brands who speak to us on a human level. Not only are customers more likely to buy from brands they trust, but they are also willing to pay more for products and services. On average, brands with stronger reputations offer a 31% higher shareholder return, enjoy a growth rate that’s three times faster than their competitors and a 31% greater revenue growth over a three year period compared to lesser brands.

The ultimate goal of any business is to grow an audience and produce more sales. A strong brand is key to that, and the latest trends highlight just how important it is for businesses to be transparent and authentic with their audiences. The popularity of apps such as TikTok and BeReal proves there is a shift in the way users want to interact with creators and brands online. Businesses can take advantage of this with strong branding, consistent content, and clear values.

At teclan, our team has years of experience crafting compelling brands that resonate with audiences, while creating content that engages and ultimately leads to wider brand recognition and boosting revenue. We would love to do the same for you. Get in touch with us today to learn what you could achieve with authentic branding and a clear content strategy.

There’s more to your online shop than just a digital catalogue. As your business scales and grows, your brand must follow suit if you want to remain profitable year-on-year. If your business was a person, your brand is your personality, and that is how you are introducing yourself to new people and building a solid connection with them.

It only takes about 50 milliseconds for a person to form an opinion of your brand from the moment they land on your website. That opinion determines whether they stay or leave.

According to an article from The Cheskin Research & Studio Archetype, as far back as 1999, the six most important factors in building trust for an eCommerce company’s website are (in this order):

  1. Brand
  2. Navigation
  3. Fulfilment
  4. Presentation
  5. Modern technology
  6. Security

So, if a user’s first impression of your website is an inconsistent brand, or a brand that looks like every other website they’ve seen, why would they continue to look at your products or choose you over the competition?

Creating a brand that resonates

To hone the art of creating a good impression, you must create a brand that is irresistibly appealing to customers.

Here is a process you can use to ensure that you consistently stand out from the competition and resonate with your audience:

Trust is a key factor and brand consistency fosters trust

Brand consistency is the ability to deliver consistent messaging and design across all platforms over time. All messages and design elements should be in line with your brand themes, values, voice and mission. Again, we tend to trust people more who don’t change at the drop of a hat, and the same goes for a brand. If you are consistent, you are more likable and dependable.

Brand consistency also makes your business easily recognised, which means our customers will immediately start thinking about you when they see your marketing – without even being asked to make a purchase. When you make your customers feel like they know, depend on, and trust your brand, they are much more inclined to hit the ‘buy now’ button.

Establishing brand consistency

To create brand consistency that is on par with the bestselling brands, you need to nail the following:

In order to maintain a consistent brand, the single most important thing you can do is develop a set of brand guidelines that outline every aspect of your brand strategy that include your logo, colour scheme, tagline, typography and key messaging. Every employee who creates visual or written content for the brand should adhere to these guidelines at all times, across all channels.

How a compelling brand increases sales

Not only are customers more likely to buy from brands they trust, they are willing to pay more for their products as well.

On average, brands with stronger reputations offer a 31% higher shareholder return, enjoy a growth rate that’s three times faster that their competitors and a 31% greater revenue growth over a three year period compared to lesser brands.

Brand presence

It’s all very well and good having a bulletproof set of brand guidelines, but unless you are showcasing your brand in the right places, nobody will know you are there. A great social media presence is necessary for tangible e-commerce results.

According to data from BigCommerce, online stores with a strong social media presence have an average of 32% more sales than those who don’t use, or are not active, on social media. And 85% of orders from social media sites come from Facebook (Shopify).

But bear in mind: quality over quantity.

Focus on the social media channels that your customers use instead of what’s trending, make sure you have capacity to reply to user questions, comments and reviews and consider partnering with micro-influencers to reach your target audience cost effectively.

Conclusion
